001 | CAPTURE LIFE’S MOMENTS BY USING VISUALS, AUDIO & VIDEO

HOW TO CHOSE THE MEDIA TYPE TO RECORD LIFE’S MOMENTS WITH

LIFE OFFERS US

Moments after moments after moments. Every single day we live, it just keeps hitting us with moments. As long as we are alive, this keeps happening. And this is a good thing. Cause otherwise we

WOUDLDN’T HAVE THEM

Obvious. So the basic trick in life and of life seems to be to use those moments. Maybe to do something about them. Maybe do something with them. And this is where a

CAMERA MEETS THESE MOMENTS

A moment on its own. But one that’s worth talking about. One that’s worth discussing. And so this is

WHAT WE DO BY TRYING TO SHOT

is we actually are alert. Because we have to. In order to not miss these moments. The moment when your child takes your first steps. The moment the bride at a wedding maybe gives the new spouse a quick glance of excitement about, well, it’s yours to interpret. But often these moments are doomed so important, because, yet again

LIFE CONSISTS OF THESE MOMENTS

And by therefore capturing them, we not only learn to value these moments but simultaneously life itself. This means we actually practice being grateful for the life we got every single time we appreciate a moment by

RECORDING SOMETHING

It doesn’t have to be just a picture. It also can be just audio. Or just video. Think about these media types like this: If you can express it with a single picture, then it is probably the best thing. Why? Because a picture can be viewed in seconds, split seconds even. The quick glance of the bride we talked about. Can be rewatched again and again. But just taking a look at the picture. But there are

MOMENTS TO BE CAPTURED

that just don’t fit into a picture. Or rather you don’t think it’s best represented by a picture. Because you actually don’t want the picture alone. But you want more. You don’t wanna only capture a tiny fracture of a second, but

RATHER SECONDS

Then for the most part, this means recording video. But video is not the elongated version of pictures. A picture alone is something entirely visual. So if we actually wanted to define these media types you can use to record or just in general use to represent something, we would

START WITH VISUO

A short slug for everything purely visual. But also: meant to be viewed in one single moment. Not a series of moments. Then,

THERE IS AUDIO

used to capture vibrations of things and mostly air. We as humans can interpret them as something we can listen to. But actually, all these sounds out there, are

JUST VIBRATING THINGS

and by listening to them we actually turn these movements, these vibrations into something to listen to. And this is also the main criterion when you wanna record only audio. If it is

SOMETHING WORTH LISTENING TO

but also something you only wanna listen to. By recording audio-only you intentionally make the choice of cutting out other senses of ours. You cannot smell audio. You cannot see it. Not in a single moment and not in a series of moments. But you can only listen to it. Actually

ISN’T IT KIND OF STRANGE

You can only record or interpret audio as something longer than the infinitely small moments life and therefore time consists of? Audio doesn’t have the “only-one-moment” equivalent video has with the picture. With a picture cutting out a

SINGLE FRAME OF LIFE

And then there is VIDEO. Basically a combination of the other two media types. Together these are the three media types you can use. VISUO, AUDIO and combining them

GIVES YOU VIDEO

You record a sequence of pictures. Therefore a series of these moments. Depending on the frame rate you chose, – see how the word framerate actually pretty accurately depicts

HOW VIDEO IS MADE?

By using single “visuals” and combining them into an array of these. And if we as humans see these single visuals in a framerate high enough, or rather a frequency that’s high enough to trick us into thinking these single visuals isn’t an array of single visuals, but actually something else. Something even more accurately depicting reality and it’s

MOVEMENT

then we forget about the single visuals. Of course, this is not something you can really do intentionally. But it happens rather automatically at a frequency of roughly about 20 frames per second. Or even before this threshold.

EVER SEEN THUMB CINEMA?

Well, you couldn’t explain the concept of recording movement by using single visuals much better than that. No, we know the media types, but the question stays

HOW TO USE THEM?

Record something into a “VISUO” whenever you wanna focus on one single of life’s moments. This doesn’t mean it is also meant to be watched in a single moment. If you record speech in a quote and put it down as text, with text also only being a visual and a book just a series of these visuals

YOU CAN MAKE THE VIEWER FOCUS

onto the thing you want. Write text and the viewer will read it. Take a picture and the viewer will watch it. Record AUDIO and the viewer will listen to it. And record VIDEO if you wanna have somebody view all these single moments one after the other, view them and also listen to the
